I just learned that I am being sent to Winnipeg.... November 6 to November 9 inclusive. I am pretty sure the answer is no, but any Oppos there? Anyone know of anything good?
I honestly would rather go to any other city in Canada and or almost any city in the US (hi Philly!)

But that lake though (which I just discovered is not by Winnipeg )

I think that what you see above is the highlight of the City.
You know when you google a place and every nice picture has the same things in it? That’s a bad sign.

I’m in Winnipeg every year! But in June, and only for as long as it takes to get halfway around the never ending perimeter highway. I know they have a massive land fill, an outdoor sports park with climbing walls, and one of those wakeboard things that pulls you along on a cable, and a horse track. Those likely won’t be open in November though.
Have fun.

Yeah that doesn’t reek good right off the bat
Their tourism site actually came up with 101 things to do

Nah. It’s not Vancouver, for sure, but the divide between rural and urban Manitoba is much bigger than it is in say, Alberta.

You're going the wrong way around the perimeter. Go north to avoid all those things, except the horse track. Unless you're coming from the south, in which case... Well the only alternatives are city streets or the grid.

I think Fort McMurray would be worse. So at least you’re not going to Fort McMurray.
And you could do a Mural walking tour:

And go to a country night club:

And you could go to the FAME night club:

And you can see MORE Dirty Dancing:

And go to a Royal Canadian Mint Coin Exchange

I’ve actually never been to Winnipeg.

Coming from the south, towing a 21' boat, with no less than three trucks/boats in the convoy, and getting off on highway 6. The perimeter is the shortest route, but it just seems soooooo long. Funnily enough I’ve been going through Winnipeg for 18 years now but know very little of it. Other than what I mentioned above the only things I could probably find are the McDonalds on the south side, and the farmers market.

I know many people who live in Winnipeg who love it. Me? Meh. I’ll stay out of that overpopulated hell hole if I can.
The music scene isn't bad. I mean the place bred BTO, Bif Naked, The Guess Who. The arts scene in general is alright. Couple decent museums, etc. The big thing I would recommend is Festival du Voyageur, but if you can't hack November, you may struggle coming back for a largely outdoor event in February.

It's really not all that far away. Like, about an hour north of the city?

An hour away is not lakefront! >:(

And you’re probably thinking of the St Nobert farmer’s market. Not exactly Winnipeg, just may as well be.
Yeah for highway 6 you definitely don’t want to be going the other way. I like the perimeter in that it really does go around the city. The southern end there’s some holdup because the city kinda grew south, but otherwise, yeah. Around. If you’re headed east/west, then you go north, and don’t really come into contact with much city, apart from the bit near the Downs through Headingly. I’ve only been to the D owns a couple times, effectively auto crossing marked p71's as part of a driver’s ed program. But that's what driving through that part of southern MB is like. Not much out there with big spaces in the middle.

Meh. It’s named after the other muddy water that runs smack down the middle of it. No one said anything about lakefront. But in southern Manitoba, only an hour’s drive is pretty friggen close together.

That’s the one.

Downtown is pretty, there’s a Granville island public market style place called The Forks that I think was kinda cool. Louis Riel’s house is worth taking a look at. People are really friendly as long as you’re not in one of the sketchy/gangy neighbourhoods.

I think I may be the closest Oppo six hours away (I'll be in Regina those days). The Forks is a pretty spot down by the Red River, the Human Rights Museum is fascinating, and stay out of the north end unless you want to die. I could ask my girlfriend for things to do since she's from just north of there.
![]() 10/12/2018 at 19:05 |

Yeah... North end sounds... bad.
too bad you’re gonna be so far away, it’d be cool to meet

My girlfriend’s uncle was a police officer in Winnipeg. Some of the stories he’s told... Yeah, just avoid it.
T hat’s the problem with Canada being really really big. Maybe next spring/summer, if I can get time off.

I hear it gets cold at Portage and Main. 40 below even.
